Performance Notes
Lesur’s Five interludes are little character-pieces that get close to the extremes of the horn register. The first piece is a slow introduction with an ostinato in horns 2-4, and a syncopated counter-melody in horn 1. This is followed by a fast interlude with frequent time changes and mostly independent parts. Number 3 is again slow, with a repeated pattern in horns 2 and 3, and horns 1 and 4 going to the high and low extremes respectively. The fourth piece features a fourth horn solo, with varying accompaniment in the other three parts. The final interlude is similar in character to the 2nd, with time changes, and some technical finesse required. Lesur's writing is tonal throughout, and with the added piano reduction in the score, it is possible to sample the work should a quartet not be readily available.
