Performance Notes
Hyde’s Linear contrasts vol.1 is difficult to rate in terms of difficulty. While the range poses few problems for an intermediate quartet, the rhythmically challenged my find this a work not so easy to master. In fact, as the composer himself notes, this is a “romp through some rhythms”, and “some practice, perhaps” in rhythms more associated with commercial rather than classical music.
On the positive side, Hyde gives the performers ample chance to get it right, with many sections repeated a few times, setting the grove so as to speak. The whole work is in a fast tempo, around 160 beats per minute, and the harmonies are jazzy. Whether acquired as a rhythmic exercise, a light-hearted piece of commercial music, or just a fun work to put on the concert program, Linear contrasts vol.1 is an excellent purchase.
