- a venture into three-quarter time, with both horizontal and vertical contrasts
Performance Notes
Unlike Linear contrasts vol.1, this work is not so difficult in terms of rhythm, bur rather, as the composer notes, a “venture … with both horizontal and vertical contrasts”. The vertical writing consists of homo-rhythmic passages, while the horizontal writing is represented by quaver (eight note) passages that start in one voice and then are taken over one by one by the others. So much for the first few pages (of the score), after which homo-rhythm predominates, and horizontality is represented by mere quaver passages in either of the parts.
Much less of an exercise than its predecessor, Linear contrasts vol.2 is content with being a pleasant jazz waltz, and should be sought out if that is what is wanted in an upcoming quartet concert.
