Performance Notes
Guentzel’s Nocturno no.8 for four horns is in classical form, with an introduction, presentation of the theme, repetition of the theme, middle section, and recapitulation with a different ending (than the exposition). The harmonies are romantic, and the range of each individual part is limited. The overall range is also limited, and there is no bass clef used, which would make this a work easy to play were it not for the first horn part (with extended playing in the high range).
The musical elements contained in this work are simple (scales and arpeggi), as would be expected from a nocturne. It is nevertheless convincing, and recommended to the intermediate quartet.
