Performance Notes
Henslee's Rondo de Tucson is a short and easy quartet centred around the keys of C major and G minor. Written in 3/4 (however being a Rondo), it plays with the ambivalence between the aforementioned meter and the more traditional 6/8. In the opening C major section, for instance, 3/4 dominates, and the 4th horn continues straight crotchets (quarter notes) all the way through. The other voices however soon change into a felt 6/8 meter - or alternatively slightly awkward syncopated rhythms.
The G minor section consists of a straight forward first horn solo line, with a syncopated rhythmn (in 3/4) in the other three voices, followed by a 2nd, canonic section, that explores simple chromaticism.
Henslee modulates back into the opening theme via a G major chord, and what follows is an exact copy of the beginning, plus an attached coda of 4 bars re-stating the final key.
This is a very accessible work available at a reasonable price.
