Performance Notes
This Divertimento is rondo-like, with a melodic first subject in horns 1 and 3 (in octaves), and a militaristic 2nd subject (staccato, with repeated-note triplets) that keep recurring throughout the piece. In between there are variations on and combinations of those two subjects, as well as some new material. While the range and intervals used are not that difficult, the rather quick tempo results in the need for some advanced techniques: triple tonguing (on the same note), uncommon intervals leaps, fast single (or slow double) tonguing over large intervals, and quick modulations. The work features many augmented and open harmonies, but ultimately ends in an A major (horn pitch) chord. As with many other Belwin publications, this volume is currently out of print.
