Performance Notes
Martinet’s arrangement starts four bars before the solo voices enter, omitting the orchestral introduction. The original key of B major / G major is disregarded, and D major / B flat major (A major and F major in horn pitch) are used instead. This is an understandable compromise, as most other key combinations would have resulted in key signatures or ranges difficult to play. To put it a tone lower would have been another possibility, into G and E flat major (horn pitch).
The piece is arranged very well, with the theme in horns 1 and 2, the main accompaniment figure in horn 3, and the bass in horn 4. Like in the original, it is the repeats and the D.C. that make the piece as long as it is, rather than new material. Due to its worldwide fame, the so called Flower duet from Lakme is an excellent addition to any concert program, and it is hard to go wrong with this arrangement.
